Negotiation is Simple!
Listening to Mor Assia, founder of iAngels, share her insights regarding negotiation with investors, I kept thinking: what she says is so simple, so why is it so hard to for me and for so many people to implement?
I went over the few dramatic negotiation scenarios I had in my life and I remember my self being very emotional and challenged to be methodological and practical about it.
It isn't always so dramatic. On different variations negotiating is something we are required to do on a daily basis.
Actually, it’s so natural and inevitable for us to do it as human beings, that I literally see my niece doing it with my sister regarding the amount of sweets she can eat on a weekly basis. My niece is only 5 years old (!!!) and it seems like she already knows all the negotiation tricks there is to know and she gets better on them every week.
So, why is it so hard when it comes to Money?
First, because we take it personal. Instead of looking at it on a practical and methodological way, like Mor does, with clarity and mastery, it corresponds with our fear of rejection.
And second, because we are self-centered. Part of negotiation is really understanding and taking into account what the other person wants, but to be REALLY HONEST - the majority of us, including myself, don’t really care about what others want/feel/think. We just care about our own needs, desires and fears, and not only that it makes negotiations harder - it makes life harder.
So this is what I’m taking from Mor - I want to flip my habit and get used to think most of the time on what others feel and how can I serve them. This will not only improve me as a human being but will also help me not to take things so personal.
